Top 5 Posts of the Past Year: #1 The Venezuelan Beauty Culture

As (Im)Migrating with a Purpose’s birthday month comes to a close, so does this Top 5 Countdown. My most popular post this past year (un)surprisingly pertains to the very same thing that makes Venezuela famous: beauty.

Known for its dominance of international beauty pageants, I posted a thing or two about beauty in Venny. This post, The Venezuelan Beauty Culture, won out amongst readers. Enjoy!

Top 5 Posts of the Past Year: #2 TFA and KIPP? I Vote No.

My second most popular post on my one year anniversary countdown is TFA and KIPP? I Vote No.

I have very strong opinions, grounded in years of personal contact (years in relation to KIPP; about one year in relation to TFA), concerning these organizations. I sat on this post for days, consulted with my mother, thought about it, etc…before deciding to go ahead and publish it. I already know that one day I’ll publicly discuss (where I’m physically present and not just writing from a computer) my lack of support for both organizations. Until then, this post says it all for me.

Top 5 Posts of the Year: #3 Hold on to the Beautiful Moments

“First is the worst, second is the best, third is the one with the treasure chest (or hairy chest).”

Does anyone else remember chanting that in line when in pre-school? It was often accompanied with some shoving, elbowing, or (if one was lucky) polite moving when racing to get into line at the teacher’s call.

Well, my third most popular post from the past year is a personal treasure chest. I wrote this post because I needed it. I needed to comfort myself. Titled Hold on to the Beautiful Moments, I wrote it during the height of the Venezuelan protests and marches. It was when I finally began to take pictures of what was going on around me. Before then, I had been too scared to do so.

Top 5 Posts of the Past Year: #4 Lupita Nyong’o Broke My Heart

My fourth most popular post from the past year, Lupita Nyong’o Broke My Heart, honors the talented and radiant Lupita Nyong’o. When I saw that she was named People Magazine’s Most Beautiful person I immediately jumped on Skype to ask my mom to purchase the magazine. My mom willingly complied, and my eyes pricked with tears when I finally read the article months later. I didn’t want to read a digital edition. I needed to hold the print copy right in my hands.

I can’t wait to see how Lupita’s career unfolds. She’s an icon and an inspiration. I also love that she speaks Spanish! That’s another goal of mine.

Top 5 Posts of the Past Year: #5 He’s Not Coming

In honor of the year anniversary of my blog, I’m re-posting my five most popular pieces.

Coming in at #5 is He’s Not Coming. This post was written in the throes of the protests that rocked Venezuela in February and March. Now roughly four months removed from this baptism by protests, I find myself in a somber mood when reflecting on that time. In exactly one week I will return to Venezuela for a second year. I honestly do not know what the future will hold, but I pray all will be safe.

“He’s Not Coming” was my blunt response to an opposition-supporting neighbor who hoped that President Obama would intervene to help the protesters during this tense time. Read on to find out why I told her this.
